The CCF/ECF (and likely the reformed Teachers' Standards, when they come) give significant importance in section two to the understanding pupil misconceptions and this relationship to prior knowledge. They state that a teacher should learn how to 'build on prior knowledge by Identifying possible misconceptions and planning how to prevent these forming (2.d).
